Chief Justice Of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar took a suo moto notice for the murder of Zeeshan Butt a Journalist in Sialkot. On Saturday, April 7th, 2018 CJP directed Inspector General (IG) Punjab Arif Nawaz Khan who was present in the courtroom for the hearing of the case to arrest the suspect in 4 days.
Supreme Court’s bench consists of 2 members leading by CJP Mian Saqib Nisar and supported by Justice Ejaz-ul-Ahsan asked IG Punjab to put the suspect’s name on Exit Control List (ECL) which was acknowledged and confirmed by IG to have the main suspect’s name on ECL.
Brief Background Of the Incident
According to the sources and witnesses of the incident, Zeeshan Butt who was a journalist in Lahore based Newspaper, he visited the office of Union Council chairman of Samaryal Tehsil of Sialkot on Tuesday, March 27, 2018, UC Chairman Imran Cheema belongs to the ruling party PML-N and has a great influence over the community in his UC. Zeeshan Butt inquired him about some taxes levied on shop owners in Begowala Union council. According to the reports, Butt and Cheema have been contesting the municipal elections in Past and has some enmity on the personal level.
Upon receiving death threats from UC Chairman Imran Cheema and his men, the journalist Zeeshan butt called DSP Sambrial and informed him about death threats. And furthermore, he called District Chairman Hina Arshad Warraich and tried to tell her the situation but during this phone conversation he was shot four times in the chest and got killed and didn’t have a chance to finish his conversation.
Affiliation of the Suspect
The main suspect, in this case, UC Chairman Imran Cheema is affiliated with the ruling party PML-N, but according to IG Punjab he has no support in this case from any of his party’s leaders but is still at large. CJP gave 4 days deadline to IG Punjab to arrest Cheema and other suspects in this murder case and present them to the court. And police must not give any favor or show any kind of leniency towards the suspect.
