Talking About What Matters: World Suicide Prevention Day

Mental illness and disorders, something that is a major taboo in our local society, is also something that proves to be terribly fatal despite its constant ridicule. It’s not uncommon to come across news and headlines describing how a student killed himself because of academic pressures.

With the recent news of model and fashion designer Anam Tanoli’s suicide and world famous rapper and producer Mac Miller’s suicide, it’s really not something trivial to joke about.

Out of the 1.5 million violent deaths in the world, suicide stands at 800,000 every year. Suicide, the mental collapse of a person that leaves them with no choice but to take their own life, is a very a serious topic to acknowledge. We must create awareness and extend our help on the matter. 10th of September is the day known as World Suicide Prevention Day.

World Suicide Prevention Day is an awareness day observed on the 10th of September every year, in order to provide worldwide commitment and action to prevent suicides, with various activities around the world since 2003.The International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP), collaborates with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH), to host World Suicide Prevention Day.

On its first event in 2003, the 1999 World Health Organization’s global suicide prevention initiative is mentioned with regards to the main strategy for its implementation, requiring:

  • The organization of global, regional and national multi-sectoral activities to increase awareness about suicidal behaviors and how to effectively prevent them.
  • The strengthening of countries’ capabilities to develop and evaluate national policies and plans for suicide prevention.

Suicide has a number of complex and interrelated and underlying contributing factors … that can contribute to the feelings of pain and hopelessness. Having access to means to kill oneself – most typically firearms, medicines and poisons – is also a risk factor.

Suicide is great cause of concern for the world today and it is our responsibility as human beings to look out for others around us and do whatever in our power to help and play our part and duty as citizens in this world.
