Supreme Court Summons PIA Executives

Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Saqib Nisar has taken the suo moto against the privatization of National Flag Carrier Pakistan International Airline (PIA). Supreme Court (SC) has summoned all the bosses of the organization and ordered them to appear in every court hearing and put their names on Exit Control List (ECL). On Thursday, April 12, 2018, SC revised its decision and barred all the PIA executive and top-ranked officials from leaving the country without court’s permission, hence their names will not be in ECL.

CJP Saqib Nisar who is heading the three-member bench of SC has ordered to form a commission to conduct the detailed investigation into suo moto action against the privatization of PIA and determine the reasons behind the sudden dramatic accumulated losses of one of the largest assets of the state. During the hearing, PIA’s counselor produced the record and audit reports for last 10 years according to which PIA suffered a loss of Rs 44 billion in 2013, Rs 37 billion in 2014, Rs 32 billion in 2015, Rs 45 billion in 2016 and Rs 44 billion in 2017.

On the other hand, Dr. Farukh Saleem who was appointed the head of the commission informed the court that PIA had a profit of over Rs 1 billion in 2002, but unfortunately after this downfall of PIA started because of the alleged corruption from the top management in the organization, after which matters went downhill. Hence SC summoned all the top management of PIA including MD’s for last ten years and ordered them to appear in court for all the hearings regarding this case and remain part of the investigation.
