Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif is the current Chief Minister of Punjab. He is known as a reformer because he has changed the shape and has developed Punjab, specifically Lahore. He is a dynamic political leader who is known for his strong and efficient administration.
Education and Family of Shehbaz Sharif
Mian Shahbaz Sharif was born on the 23rd of September, 1951 in Lahore to an upper-middle-class businessman and industrialist, Muhammad Sharif. Shahaz Sharif received Bachelor of Arts degree from the Government College University, Lahore. After graduation, he joined his family owned business of ‘Ittefaq Group’ and later on in 1985; he got elected president of Lahore Chamber of Commerce & Industry (LCCI).
He has two brothers, Abbas Sharif, and Nawaz Sharif. Nawaz is a three-time elected Prime Minister of Pakistan. Sharif first married to his cousin, Nusrat Shehbaz. The couple married in 1973, and had two sons, Salman and Hamza, and two daughters Javeria and Rabia. Hamza Shahbaz Sharif is a member of the National Assembly. Shehbaz Sharif, then, married to Tehmina Durrani in 2003.
Political Career of Shahbaz Sharif
Shahbaz Sharif began his political career after getting elected to the Provincial Assembly of Punjab for the first time in 1988; however his term ended ahead of time in 1990 when the assemblies were dissolved. He was elected to the Provincial Assembly of Punjab for the second time and to the National Assembly of Pakistan for the first time in the 1990 general election. He vacated the Provincial Assembly seat and retained the National Assembly NA-96 seat. However his term prematurely ended in 1993 when the assemblies were dissolved again. He was re-elected to the Provincial Assembly of Punjab in 1993 for the third time and became leader of the opposition in Provincial Assembly of Punjab.
He was re-elected to the Provincial Assembly of Punjab in 1997 for the fourth time and was elected as the Chief Minister of Punjab for the first time. He was sworn in as Chief Minister of Punjab on 20 February 1997. During his tenure as Chief Minister of Punjab, he was praised for his good governance in the province because of his focus on health, education, agriculture and industrial sectors. He undertook several development projects in Lahore and launched a crackdown on criminals across the province to maintain law and order in the province. He held the office till October 12, 1999 when the military under staged a coup under General Pervez Musharraf and toppled the government of his brother and then Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif. He was arrested from the Prime Minister in Islamabad along with his brother. He was imprisoned and then exiled to Saudi Arabia.
He returned to Pakistan along with other family members on November 25, 2007 and landed at the Allama Iqbal Airport in Lahore. In the General Elections of 2008, he was elected unopposed as Member of Punjab Assembly for the fourth term, and he is presently functioning for the third time as Chief Minister, Punjab.
