Senate Elections 2018 Schedule

Today on Friday, February 2nd, 2018 Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has announced the schedule for the Senate elections for the year 2018 in all 4 provinces of Pakistan for the period of next Six years, while the schedule for the seats reserved for Country’s Capital Islamabad and FATA will be announced at a later date by ECP. The total term for Members of the Senate is Six years for the continuity of the process in the National affair, but 52 of the total members retire after 3 years.

Number of Seats in Senate

Senate which is also called the Upper House of the Parliament consists of 104 members, 23 members from each of the four provinces, 4 members from the federal capital, and 8 members from Federally Administrated Tribal Area (FATA). Every Provincial Assembly elects 23 Members to represent their province and make legislation, whereas 4 members of the Federal Capital are elected by National Assembly and remaining 8 members for FATA are elected by the Members of The Parliament from FATA and president have authority to prescribe these members. Out of 23 elected members, 14 of them are general seats, 4 seats for Women, 4 seats for technocrats, and one seat for minorities.

Role of the Senate

Senate is basically the Upper part of the Legislative  Chamber, their main role is to make new legislation and make necessary changes in the current legislation. When the Upper house combines with the Lower house, it makes the Parliament. Senate gives the equal representation in the parliament for each province, but on the other hand, national assembly or the lower house number of members depends on the population of the province. Half of the members of the Senate will retire on March 11th, 2018 after six years being in the upper house. Out of these 52 members, 12 each from Punjab and Sindh, 11 each from Khyber Pakhtun­khwa and Balochistan, two from Islamabad and four from the Federally Admi­nistered Tribal Areas (Fata) will retire in March.

Scheduled Date for Senate Elections 2018

Senate elections for the year 2018 will be held on March 3rd, 2018 as announced by Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). ECP will be accepting applications doe the nomination of Senate elections from 4th -6th of February and final list of the contestants for Upper house elections will be issued by ECP on 15th, of February.
