The terms psychologist” and psychiatrist” are commonly used to portray someone who offers therapy services, but the two professions and the services provided by each profession differ in terms of content and treatment.


A Psychologist is someone who deals human behavior and psychological illness/disorders. Therapist is the second name for psychologist who gives therapy to people who are afflicting from different kinds of mental illness.

A Psychiatrist is a medical doctor specialized in physical treatment of mental disorders. There focus is highly on diagnosing and treating physiological aspects of mental illness/disorders.

A psychologist requires a master’s degree in psychology. Clinical and counseling psychologist must have a doctorate degree, either a Ph.D. or a PsyD. To be known as ‘psychologist,’ they must be trained to work in both research and counseling. All psychologists receive education and training in psychological testing as well.

A psychiatrist, on the other hand, needs to become a medical doctor. They pursue an undergraduate degree in a field related to the medical sciences. This degree may be in biology, chemistry, physics, or some other related subject. Subsequently, they get a medical degree. Med school typically takes another four years, after that they complete their internships and training in psychiatry etc.

Since a psychiatrist is a medical doctor, people who have medical problems that escort to mental disorders are being treated by a psychiatrist. Medicines are prescribed to treat patients. The following conditions are treated by a psychiatrist with or without the help of a psychologist:

Psychologist and psychiatrist mutually have their individual significance in humanity but psychiatrist treats people  all the way through recommending a variety of medicines where as a psychologist plays a huge role in altering them through an art called therapy.
