Mercury Entering Retrograde: Here’s What It Means

If you’re into astrology or have heard a few things about it, you’d be familiar with the current news about the Mercury Retrograde. But what is it and why do people care about it? Read on to find out.

When the planet Mercury enters apparent retrograde motion, that marks the beginning of a span of misfortune down on Earth. At least, that is, according to proponents of astrology, who have made the phrase “Mercury in retrograde” an increasingly exciting one over the past few years.

Basically, retrograde motion is when a planet appears, when observed from Earth, to reverse direction. This happens due to an optical illusion caused by differences in orbit.

In the realm of astrology, retrograde motion has negative connotations, because Mercury is the planet said to rule communication, those who are astrologically inclined expect frequent misunderstandings, scheduling problems and disagreements with friends during this period.

Since Mercury is the fastest planet in our solar system, it enters apparent retrograde motion between three and four times a year, for about three weeks at a time.

So how does this affect us and why does it matter?

Well, astrology has over the course of recent years and with the aid of technology gained a lot of interest amongst the youth particularly and is highly linked with natal charts and zodiac interpretation of individuals.

And, while many have jumped to label the astrology boom as another millennial trend, that may not actually be the case.

According to Nicholas Campion, a historian of cultural astrology at the University of Wales, it is difficult to say whether fascination with star signs is any more prevalent than it has been in the past since studies on the popularity of astrology weren’t conducted until recent years. While those numbers will never be known, looking at the history of popular astrology, changes in technology have a significant influence on how people engage with astrological insight.

So how does it affect us?

Mercury is the ruling planet of all communication. From cognition, to speech, to intake. Verbal, written, typed, texted, or recorded. Business partnerships, creative projects, friendships, romance. If you think about it, pretty much everything revolves around communication. So, does Mercury Retrograde mean communication is going to go backward?

Not exactly, no, but it does mean things can go awry more easily than usual, but there are lessons to be learned during these phases. Astrologers recommend easing off certain pursuits, like starting new endeavors, signing contracts, completing tasks, and building new relationships. If traveling, it is even recommended that you allot extra time for mishaps. Generally, you should make space for heightened miscommunication among the people you interact with on a daily basis. Take this time to be mindful, stay calm, and reflect. Practice compassion with yourself and everyone else. Basically, this retrograde affects communication, travel, and unstable relationships.

It’s a period when you might face trouble in travel and getting to places, have issues with communication in general and its the time when problems occur resulting instability in relationships in your professional and personal lives. Its effects vary from person to person. But if you don’t believe in it then perhaps you won’t be bothered by it that much.
