VIN is the abbreviation for Vehicle Identification Number. Every car in the world has its own unique identification number called VIN. Now why every car its own unique number? It’s because to easily pin point specific car without go into lots of hassle. It’s like assigned number for the vehicle in every manufacturer’s database, but any 2 vehicles that are operational cannot have the same VIN.
Just like all other countries, in Pakistan, VIN consists of 17 characters, including alphabets and numbers and each character has its own coded meaning. VIN reads unique features and all necessary specifications as well as manufacturer details. It is considered to be the most important part of car’s coding in Pakistan because it can be used to claim warranties, it appears in car registrations and you can also track your car.
First time VINs were used in cars to identify specific motor vehicle in 1954. Between 1954 and 1981, every manufacture had their own standard format which was specific to all the models of same manufacturer. In 1981, the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) decided to standardized the format, in which all the vehicles that are sold must have a 17 Character VIN, which does not include the letters I (i), O (o), and Q (q) (to avoid confusion with numerals 1 and 0). Therefore If the VIN is not 17 characters long, VIN is most likely from a car with model prior to 1981.
Where Can I Find the VIN on my car?
You can find your car’s VIN number on Insurance card or Insurance policy or Car’s receipt and you can always look on to your car’s registration. Other than that you can also find VIN by looking at the dashboard on the driver’s side of the vehicle while standing outside the . The easiest way to view it is to the bottom corner of the dashboard. If you cannot find VIN there, it can be found on the driver’s side door at the door post (where the door latches when it is closed).

Components of the VIN
Modern VINs are based on two related standards, originally issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in 1979 and 1980: ISO 3779 and ISO 3780, respectively. Compatible but different implementations of these ISO standards have been adopted by the European Union and the United States, respectively.
