How to Start Tunnel Farming in Pakistan

There is a great demand of vegetables all year round. Prices are at the highest at the start and end of the season. Farmers can get high returns on different crops if modern techniques are applied to grow off-season crops in Pakistan. Vegetables & fruits can be cultivated in off-season, with introduction of techniques like tunnel technology, in which temperature and moisture is controlled for growth of crops in specific conditions. The production of vegetables all-round the year, enables the technically competent growers of fruits & vegetables to fully utilize their resources and achieve higher income as compared to traditional crops.

There are three different types of tunnel farming techniques that are used in Pakistan to grow off season vegetables & fruits. This articles provides detail guides, requirements & procedures to start tunnel farming in Pakistan:

Areas in Pakistan for Off Season Tunnel Farming

Off-season vegetable & fruit production can be done in Mamonkangan, Nankana Sahib, Faisalabad, Kamalia in Toba Tek Singh, Rahim Yar Khan, Chack Shahzad, Islamabad, Swat, Tarnab, Mardan, Khairabad, Mirpur Khas, Chiniot, etc., in addition to few locations in Sindh and Balochistan.

Keeping in view the product price level, demand and purchasing power of customer; whole sale markets, metropolitan cities / urban area are the potential markets for off season vegetables.

Low Tunnel Farming in Pakistan

Off-season vegetable cultivation is recommended with the use of low tunnel farming technique in Pakistan. It is the cheapest among the available options and quite similar to conventional farming methods. These tunnels are suitable for heavy individual fruit bearing crops, i.e. melons, watermelons (tarbooz), pumpkin (kado), round gourds (tinda), squashes (papeeta) etc. For the purpose of this guide, low tunnel farming is being used as a medium sized off-season fruit farming unit on 9 acres of land. Three crops are being proposed, namely; watermelon (tarbooz), muskmelon (kharbooza) and round gourd (tinda).

The estimated yield potential of the farm varies according to the selected type of crop. With above mentioned crop mix, combined yield of 96 tons per season excluding wastage.

Low Tunnel Structure

Each tunnel will be 200 feet long, 3.5 ~ 4 feet high and 4 feet wide. The tunnel is built by a 1/4-inch diameter Iron rod of 10 feet length, in half moon shape. The plastic pipes are placed at regular intervals of approximately 10 feet. Each tunnel structure will then be covered by a 0.04 mm thick and 10 feet wide plastic sheet. Approximately 25 tunnels can be constructed on an acre of land depending on the type of vegetable, i.e. watermelon, muskmelon or round gourd.

The cost of stated structural and material requirement of such tunnel amount to Rs. 68,000 per acre (appx), including the cost related to plastic used as a shield (cover) and mulch.

Investment Required for Low Tunnel Farming Setup in Pakistan

An investment of approximately Rs. 3.5 million is required to setup low tunnel farming structure in Pakistan. Returns on the investment and its profitability are highly dependent on the entrepreneur having some practical knowledge about agriculture & farming, selection of fertile land, selection of high yield seed, cultivating the in-demand vegetables and selection of right time for vegetable cultivation. The proposed crop mix is watermelon, muskmelon and round gourd cultivated on 3 acres, 4 acres and 2 acres of land, respectively. The estimated produce would be 45 tons of watermelon, 36 tons of muskmelon and 15 tons of round gourd excluding wastage.

A detailed financial model has been developed to analyze the commercial viability of the low tunnel farming. Various cost and revenue related assumptions along with results of the analysis are outlined in this section. The projected income statement, cash flow statement and balance sheet can be studied in the pre-feasibility study of off season low tunnel farming in Pakistan by SMEDA.

High Tunnel Farming in Pakistan

Off-season vegetable cultivation is recommended with the use of high tunnels of bamboo structure on the basis of its low construction cost. The proposed project is designed as a medium sized off-season vegetable farming unit on 9 acres of land. Off-season vegetables, such as, tomatoes, chilies / hot pepper, cucumber, brinjal, sweet peppers, ridge-gourd (teenda) and bitter-gourd (karela) can be cultivated using high tunnel technology. However, for the purpose of this article, three crops are being proposed, namely, tomato, sweet pepper, and cucumber.

The estimated yield potential of the farm varies according to the selected type of vegetable. With above-mentioned vegetable mix, combined yield of 115 tons per season excluding wastage.

High Tunnel Structure

Each tunnel will be 200 feet long, 10 feet high and 30~32 feet wide. The tunnel is built by 2~3 inch diameter bamboo having 8.5~20 feet length. The bamboos are fixed at regular distance of approximately 10~15 feet. Each tunnel structure will then be covered by 0.10 mm thick plastic sheet. Approximately 6 tunnels can be constructed on an acre of land depending on the type of vegetable, i.e. tomato, sweet pepper and cucumber.

The cost of such tunnel amounts to Rs. 1,258,200 (appx), excluding the cost related to plastic used as a shield (Cover) and mulch.

Investment Required for High Tunnel Farming Setup in Pakistan

An investment of approximately Rs. 6 million is required to setup high tunnel farming structure in Pakistan. The proposed vegetable mix is tomato cultivated on 4 acres of land, sweet pepper on 2 acres and cucumber on 3 acres respectively. The estimated produce would be 50 tons of tomato, 20 tons of sweet pepper and 45 tons of cucumber excluding wastage.

A detailed financial model has been developed to analyze the commercial viability of high tunnel farming. Various cost and revenue related assumptions along with results of the analysis are outlined in this section. The projected income statement, cash flow statement and balance sheet can be studied in the pre-feasibility study of off season vegetable farming (high tunnel) in Pakistan by SMEDA.

Walk-in Tunnel Farming in Pakistan

Off-season vegetable cultivation is recommended with the use of walk in tunnel structure on the basis of its low construction cost. The proposed project is designed as a medium sized off-season vegetable farming unit, spreading over a land area of 9 acres. Off-season vegetables, such as, tomatoes, chilies, cucumber, brinjal, hot pepper, sweet peppers, watermelon, muskmelon, pumpkin, ridge-gourd (teendi) and bitter-gourd (krela) can be cultivated using walk-in tunnel technology. However for the purpose of this article, three vegetables have been proposed, namely: cucumber, bitter gourd and hot pepper.

The estimated yield potential of the farm varies according to the selected type of vegetable. For this proposed vegetable mix it is estimated that a 9 acre farm unit will yield a total of 345 tons per season excluding wastage. The land can be utilized for green manuring during the idle period to maintain the fertility of soil. Apart from green manuring, the land can also be utilized for growing seasonal vegetables in the idle period.

Walk-in Tunnel Structure
