Google pays tribute to Mehdi Hassan on his 91st Birthday

Legendary Pakistani Ghazal singer Mehdi Hassan was honored with Google’s doodle feature on his 91st birthday on July 18. Google honors every special personality with specific doodles. Many other eminent Pakistani personalities that have been honored by Google which includes Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Abdul Sattar Edhi, Noor Jehan and Nazia Hassan.

Mehdi Hassan who was known as ShehenShah e Ghazal was born on July 18, 1927 in Luna village which is located in Rajasthan, India. It has been five years since this legend left us. He started his career in first musical performance on Radio Pakistan in 1957. In the beginning, he was a thumri singer. Later on he stole the hearts of people by becoming the best legend singer of the history.

Mehdi’s first song Jab Koi Pyaar Se Bulaye Ga and the popular ghazal Ik Husn Ki Devi Se Mujhe Pyar Hua Tha made him a legend. In October 2010, HMV released Sarhadein in which Tera Milana, probably the first and last duet song featuring Mehdi Hassan and Lata Mangeshkar, was released. Ranjish Hi Sahi Dil Hi Dukhane K Liye Aa, Patta Patta Boota Boota, Dil-E-Nadan Tujhe Hua Kya Hai and Dil Ki Baat Labon Par Laakar are some of his other all-time hits. He is, however, most remembered for Faiz Ahmed Faiz’s Gullon Mein Rang Bhare.

He is an important legend in musical history. He had a great impact on society by conveying important messages in his ghazals. He was an amazing singing sensation with a soulful voice which directly touched our hearts. Mehdi Hassan sang for more than 300 movies during his entire musical career. His melodies were so perfect that they were even used for tuning other instruments. He opened up a way for Pakistani music industry to progress.

Among his awards are Nishan-e-Imtiaz, Tamgha-e-Imtiaz, Pride of Performance, and Hilal-e-Imtiaz. After a long spell of sickness, the legend passed away in a hospital in Karachi on June 13, 2012. He is no more alive, but he’ll remain in our hearts forever.
