Dargai is a Tehsil of the Malakand District in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Dargai is located nearly 200 kilometres away from Islamabad on the main highway that connects Peshawar to Swat and Chitral. The entire district is surrounded by mountains with trees of many different types. The majority of the population consists of Pashtuns with Pashto as the major language of the area.
Historically, the town of Dargai holds great importance. Local Pashtuns fought two fierce battles with the British Army at the town of Dargai in 1895 and 1897. Moreover, the famous battle of Dargai heights on which many books have been written was also fought here.
The town of Dargai has great strategic importance in economic terms as it is seen as a major trade hub between the upper and lower regions of the province. The area serves as huge market for timber and is the last train station of Northern Pakistan. Dargai is also home to a hydropower project which serves as a local tourist attraction and has also provided employment to a large number of locals.
