Hangu is the main city of the Hangu District in Khyber Pakhtunkhuwa. There are many different opinions about how the town took its name but the majority opinionated that the town was given its name by the Chinese. Hangu is also an area in China and since over the centuries many Chinese have travelled across the region it is possible that they may have named the region.
The Hangu district has a population of nearly half a million inhabitants according to the latest population consensus of 2017. The major tribe of the area is the Bangash tribe along with large numbers of Orakzai and Afridi tribesman also settled in the city. Hangu is a very beautiful place with lush green valleys and is surrounded by mountains. It used to attract a lot of tourists but in the recent past clashes between the Sunni and Shia communities has led to high militancy in the area.
There have been strong signs of Taliban influence in the area with several suicide blasts taking place in the last decade with the worst one happening in 2011 where 28 people were killed in a blast in the famous Hangu Bazaar.
