Abbottabad is located in the Eastern part of the Hazara region in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. It is located 120km North of Islamabad and is at an altitude of 1260 metres. According to the 2017 census, the city’s population stands at about 1.333 million.
During the early part of the 20th century Abbottabad became both a cantonment and sanotrium. This means that the city acts as a headquarters for the brigade of the second division of the Northern Army Corps. At the time this division consisted of four battalions. In 1901 the population was a mere 7762 and the average income was around 14,900 rupees. Based on the British rule, public institutions like high schools and government dispensaries were built. By 1948, the British Red Cross Foundation opened a hospital to deal with injured citizens of Kashmir. The city of Abbottabad is surrounded from all sides by the Sarban hills.
A magnificent scenic display of the city’s natural beauty. Being in the north, the city has a mild climate in summers, and a cool, chilly climate in winters. This makes the city an ideal place for tourists to escape the heat waves of central Pakistan. Abbottabad has one of the highest literacy rates in the country. A 2011 ranking showed that literacy rates were at 87%. This is mainly due to the city’s attraction for young students.
